A Field Guide to the Birds' Nest in the United States East of the Mississippi River (Peterson Field Guide Series)
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (May, 1975)
Authors: Hal H. Harrison, National Wildlife Federation, and Ned Smith
Average review score:

Not Many Like This Out There
This is a highly recommended book for identifying bird's nests. It's amazing to see all the different types of nests that birds make. These creatures have true workmanship. It must have been a great challenge for the photographer(s) to find and photograph all the different nests throughout this fascinating book. You don't see many books out there on the market like this, so I recommend it.

Unique and excellent resource for birders.
This book has information which to my knowledge cannot be found anywhere else. The photographs of nests and eggs must be seen to be appreciated. It is not difficult to identify a bird on the basis of its nest or egg using this book.

The Films of Harrison Ford
Published in Paperback by Citadel Pr (July, 2002)
Authors: Lee Pfeiffer and Michael Lewis
Average review score:

Useful and entertaining...
This book is really useful, as it provides an easy reference to Harrison Ford's films and allows the reader to find the ones that are worth watching.

Besides the blurbs of reviews and general information on the movies, however, this book is made really interesting (and at times really funny too) because of the stories about the production experience for each of the movies that it includes as well. Seriously, it is hard to imagine, when viewing the finished products, the disasterous, strange, and hysterical events that occurred during the making of some of the films.

So, if you are a fan of Harrison Ford or are just a big movie fan who is especially interested in behind-the-scenes type information, this book is highly recommended. If you don't care for either of the above things, why are you looking here anyhow?

It was really, really informative!
This was one of THE best HF books I have read! (It's one of the ONLY ones!) Even if you hate HF you would like this book! It has many off-screen photos. It has SO many pictures! The only thing I can say is, READ IT!!!!!!

Hank Harrison for President: A Novel

Hank Harrison For President
Perhaps the finest political satire written in the past twenty-five years. Ambassador Eckert demonstrates an uncanny understanding of the political process and the american electorate.

Political spoofery and fun on each page....
Ambassador Fred J. Eckert has written a gem of a political novel, with the unthinkable becoming laughingly plausible as the book progresses.

Imagine a TV game show's results helping to determine the next leader of the free world!

I heartily recommend this book.

The Happy Child: Changing the Heart of Education
Published in Paperback by Sentient Publications (October, 2002)
Author: Steven Harrison
Average review score:

The book to read on contemporary culture and education...
This book is about education, but a whole lot more. It takes a look at the root of the educational paradigm and the disconnection of our culture, the workplace, the home, the family as well as the schools. It is both a harsh critique of the materialism and violence of our society and a hopeful suggestion for the possibilities of a culture of change and connection. Highly recommended.

This is a very eye-opening book!
This is one of the most radical books I've read on education, because it thoroughly questions the ideas we hold as a society about what education is and what it's good for. As products of traditional education ourselves, most of us tend to just accept the basic tenets of it. Harrison examines the notion that there is a body of information and skills that everyone should learn in school. He asks how useful this approach really is, whether it prepares us adequately for our lives, whether we end up retaining or using much of the information we labor so hard to acquire, and whether it contributes anything to our happiness. In its place, he proposes a very different model for what education can be, which he developed through the process of starting a school. I've observed myself that nearly all the high school and college students I talk to have very little idea of what they want to do with their lives--their education does not help them with this basic question. The model discussed in The Happy Child would do a much better job of helping kids find this out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about the state of education in our country.

We think we have found an error : To whom can we refer it to
In volume 2 page no. 1678 chapter 295 on Acute Viral Hepatitis, The figure 295-2 we think has an error. IgM anti HAV is described to increase first & IgG is to increase later. In diagram, both have been labeled IgG.

2400 pages of disease!
This is an excellent comprehensive medical text covering practically every aspect of Internal Medicine.
A must for the Primary Care Physician.
Personally, I would get the two volume set as the single thick back has a tendancy to break away from the binding.

Herman Melville : Pierre, Israel Potter, The Piazza Tales, The Confidence-Man, Tales, Billy Budd (Library of America)
Published in Hardcover by Library of America (April, 1985)
Authors: Herman Melville and Harrison Hayford
Average review score:

It ain't all Moby Dick
If you think that you can't read classic American Literature because it's all so big and intimidating (i.e., Moby Dick) think again. Some of the short stories in this collection of Melville's "other" work are incredibly well-written insights into human nature. (As is Moby Dick, but I digress).

Billy Budd's encounter with "justice," Bartleby's statement that he would "prefer not", Benito Cerino's exploration of slavery-- these tales are not to be missed. You should read this book as a starter, then move on to the BIG OLD white whale.

The Lonesome Latter Years
Darkly humorous, cynical, horrific and melancholy, Melville's later works are the capstone to the author's deepening discontent with his America. The vision here can be frustrating: Melville conjures up the most painful, soul-searching mysteries, and then refuses to knot them up with tidy solutions. Instead, Melville deepens the moral ambiguity that seeped through the skin of the transitional Moby Dick in full-length works like Pierre and Billy Budd, Sailor. And the shorter works--among them The Piazza Tales, Benito Cereno, and Bartleby the Scrivener--are imbued with such a longing for any kind of graspable meaning, that their readers, like their characters, find themselves in a ponderous state of shock. The human condition, Melville seems to say, is one of isolation, cast adrift, searching alone for a truth that is, and always will be, inscrutable.

I'm trying to correct a typo in a review on line
could you please correct a typo I overlooked in my review of HIS VICTORIOUS INDWELLING. "Mr. Harrsion" should be "Mr. Harrison." Thanks, kp

This book is like coming home after a long absence!
After three decades of devotional reading, I found 72 of my favorite authors in this gem of a devotional book, plus dozens of others, particularly out of the Brethren tradition. It could certainly be argued that Christian thought today is "a mile wide and an inch deep," but this book goes blessedly deeper than much of today's "devotional writing." Sincere thanks to Mr. Harrsion and to Zondervan! Dr. Kathryn Presley

Horse: From Noble Steeds to Beasts of Burden

Author: Lorraine Harrison

A great book to study for equine artists
I enjoyed examining all works of art in this book to learn some techniques used by the masters, it's also a great book for ANYBODY(artist or not) who simply loves horses. It would have been nicer if it were bigger, but otherwise it's a great coffee table book.

Another little gem
In the same format as the popular books ZOO, CAT, DOG, SEX comes another overview of art and writings from ancient times to the present. Lavishly illustrated with all forms of art dealing with the Horse, author Harrison has blended academia with whimsy and the result is a treat for art and animal lovers of all ages. This is a terrific item for a gift.....

How Purdy Won: 1st World Champion of Correspondence Chess (Purdy Series)
Published in Paperback by Thinkers Press (October, 1998)
Authors: C. J. S. Purdy, Frank Hutchings, and Kevin Harrison
Average review score:

A Chess Artist
This is a game's collection of the first World Correspondence Chess Champion from the ICCF. It contains 52 games played between 1934 and 1956, it lists 53 but the gamescore for Wolfers - Purdy is given as unavailable. Of the 52, 26 are annotated by Purdy, 11 by Frank Hutchings and 7 by Kevin Harrison. The co-authors made use of Purdy's notes as available. Eight of the games are unannotated. Purdy was an OTB IM, a GM at Correspodence Chess, and a prolific writer. He regarded OTB chess as "relatively superficial" and correspondence chess as closer to art. He wrote that correspondence chess allowed one to "possess a really deep understanding of the game, and a capacity to play nearly perfect chess when not beset with the handicaps of crossboard play." Purdy exemplified this statement by losing only two games over his entire competitive career and being undefeated for a period of nearly fifteen years. Purdy thought that miscalculations were inevitable in OTB chess and that correspondence chess players have "the time to analyze deeply and the incentive to take that time." Indeed, in one of his games he tempts his opponent into playing a freeing move, because he saw a win nearly twenty moves deep. An original document of Purdy's analysis shows him considering twenty alternatives on his fortieth move in a major piece ending with three pawns apiece. In an another game, indicative of his eagerness to examine the exception to the rule, Purdy accepts double pawns and four pawn islands, compared to Black's two, to display the power of his Bishop pair. He later sacrifices an exchange, doubling yet another set of pawns, to force home the win. Many of the games are just masterful. The centerpiece of the book has to be the game Bigot - Purdy, which Purdy titled "The Hardest Game of My Life" and designated, according to Tim Harding in Winning at Correspondence Chess, as "the best and most important" game in his chess career. A premature pawn advance at move 13 gives Purdy grim prospects. He toughs out the middlegame at the brink of defeat to find an incredible move resulting in a self-pin. Then down by a pawn in a drawn ending, he swindles his opponent into an inferior continuation by the judicious use of conditional moves and wins. The whole game is annotated over eight pages and includes some analysis busting by Fritz3 published in the magazine Correspondence Chess #131. There are three other games that are each annotated over 7-8 pages as well. When self-improvement books suggest playing over well-annotated games of the masters - this is the kind that they are referring to. After winning the world championship Purdy retired from correspondence play and returned to OTB competition. In fact he died at an OTB competition. His last words being, "I have a win but it will take some time." The openings, some albeit old fashioned, vary widely. Purdy mostly played 1.e4, but also 1.d4 and 1.c4. As Black he played the Slav, the QGD, the Nimzo-Indian, and the Gruenfeld against 1.d4 and he heartily adhered to double king pawn openings versus 1.e4. There is one conundrum. On page thirteen it lists Purdy's competitive record as 34 wins, 10 draws, and 2 losses, or 46 games. It is clear that they are not including four off-hand games played before Purdy began his correspondence career as otherwise his losses would be doubled and if you discount the one game played after his retirement your still left with 48 games (53 minus 5). Also, the game Purdy - Frantzen incorrectly awards the win to Black. The layout is well organized and the type is easy to read. The diagrams are distinct and an appropriate size. Apparently only one is flawed. The cover is colorful and elegantly designed. There is an index of openings, some games are cross-referenced, and all opponents are listed on the content page. Whether you're interested in C.J.S. Purdy, correspondence chess, or simply in playing winning chess, this book is recommended.

Another Purdy Classic
Just published(May/June 98) and a fine addition to the Purdy material promised by Thinker's Press. Print, layout, diagrams and proofreading are typical of tpi/Chessco/Bob Long - EXCELLENT. The material is just as good. The games are mainly from Purdy's win of the first World Postal Chess Championship. The playdowns etc began 1947/48 and his win was confirmed in 1953 after playing and beating the cream of correspondence players. His analysis is DEEP and ACCURATE and the editing by his son-in-law Frank Hutchings and others has been done with care and a professionalism that can only be admired. A welcome addition to the line of books that his widow Ann Purdy wanted so much. BUY IT.

How To Conquer Your Fears of Speaking Before People
How many times could you honestly say that a book has
transformed your life? 'Conquer' is a book that has truly
transformed mine.

As someone who struggled against 'stuttering' since I was
little, this book freed me to look at the 'process' in a
whole new light. Never again will I think of 'blocking' (or
strategies to avoid blocking) as just a 'speech problem' for
I now see it for what it was, an outcome of a holistic
process resulting from various components of my mind-body
interacting in a certain way. Seeing it this way revealed
the leverage points that has for me resulted in a
fundamental transformation.

John's work opened up whole new areas of self inquiry for
me, the last two years of my life as been nothing short of a
wonderful and exciting journey of self-discovery, with John
as my trusted guide. I am now in the last stages of 'letting
go' and being that free and self-expressive communicator
that I dreamed I could be, and I owe my progress to John's
wonderful insights and direction including references to
other relevant reading material and attending various
recommended courses.

I could not say how many times that I have read this
book, I find myself quoting from it all the time and can not
seem to talk about 'stuttering' without saying "as John
says...". What else can I say, if you a person who stutters,
or a speech therapist, or anyone looking for more freedom of
self-expression - then buy this book!!

Insightful! Refreshing! Mind Altering!
Reading this book will either cause you to breathe a sigh of relief knowing that someone else understand's the real issues behind stuttering (blocking) or you will walk away with a brand new perspective on what creates and reinforces stuttering.

Additionally, you will gain valuable information on public speaking techniques that are specially designed with the person who stutters in mind.
